Liz: July is Smart Irrigation Month

Flipping through this month's issue of Metro Magazine, I learned that July is "Smart Irrigation Month" in Minnesota. In the land of 10,000 lakes people might wonder why WE need to conserve our water.  Remember, that water going from the hose to the yard or garden has been treated by your city’s wastewater treatment center, which takes energy and therefore produces green house gasses.  As a taxpayer to your city, you’ll pay more in taxes if treatment facilities have to be expanded to meet increased demands. 

The Metro Magazine article spoke with Dr. Erik Watkins from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Horticultural Science.  He suggested lawn covers requiring less water then our typical Kentucky bluegrass.
