A couple of weeks ago, we posted a story about some outstanding middle and high school students who collected 10,000 cans and bottles in just a few days as a part of our Recycling Refund Drive. At ten cents apiece, they earned $1,000! More than that, they demonstrated how a Recycling Refund could help Minnesota increase our recycling rates from 35% to more than 80% like other states.
Now, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is designing how a Recycling Refund would work best in Minnesota. And you have an opportunity to help!
The Recycling Refund will provide another option for recycling beverage containers and complement the curbside programs available in many communities. States with refund programs have a recycling rate over 80%! The PCA needs to make two important decisions. First, whether to have a 5 cent refund like Iowa or a 10 cent refund like Michigan. Second, how to provide the most convenient locations to redeem bottles and cans for refunds. Your input can help!
The PCA’s report to the legislature is due on January 15th, but they are holding a meeting on September 30th to get public input. Please be sure to take the survey by September 25th so we can share your ideas in our message to the PCA.
