Addressing Minnesota's Garbage Problem

How big is Minnesota’s trash problem? Forty percent of our trash is packaging waste, and plastic production is expected to double in 20 years. Join us for a special event to learn more about the Packaging Waste Act and how Minnesota can better address our garbage problem. We'll learn from two special guests—State Representative Sydney Jordan and Dylan de Thomas from The Recycling Partnership.

All We Can Save Book Club

We’ll read All We Can Save, a book that intermixes essays and poetry from women at the forefront of the climate movement. Attend any session to discuss and build community around solutions. All are welcome. Books available if needed.

Volunteers pick up trash

Join us to pick up trash and other litter around the Mississippi in honor of Earth Day. Let's keep the river clean for people and wildlife to enjoy. Trash bags, gloves, and other essentials will be provided.

Spring Work Party in Rochester

Join the Rochester IKES and Conservation Minnesota to honor Earth Day with a buckthorn cutting and pulling party. Bring gloves, loppers and/or hand saws, water, protective eyewear, and sturdy shoes.

Night Sky

Join us and Starry Skies North as we learn about the effects of light pollution and the importance of dark skies at night. Then take a short hike down the old road trail at Hartley Park to the pond to view the sky. We will observe the local light pollution level and record our observations on the Globe At Night app, an international citizen science project sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Join us for an evening of engaging conversation over a meal that focuses on the climate impact of our food. Learn about each ingredient in the food and its environmental impact.

Buckthorn near a trail

Learn to identify buckthorn in various stages of growth and its impacts on our ecosystems and economy. Bring a phone or camera if you want to take pictures of specimens we identify and remember to wear pants and closed-toe shoes. After learning to identify buckthorn together, we will put our skills to the test and walk around the park identifying the plant.
