On Wednesday April 8th I was lucky enough to be able to attend the City of Edina’s Energy and Environment Commission’s fourth annual environment forum “Here Comes the Sun: Clean, Carbon-Free Energy Independence.” And what an event it was! There were over a hundred attendees interested in learning what ordinary Minnesotan communities like Edina can do to promote clean energy that will lead to more jobs and clean air and water for all Minnesotans.
We got to hear from Erica Zweifel who is the Northfield Area Community Solar Co-Chair and works at Carlton College’s Science Education Resource Center. Northfield has been on the cutting edge when it comes to local communities investing in renewable energy as it moves ahead with a plan for a large community solar garden being built on land at a local farm. In addition we got to hear a project presentation from the Edina Student Environmental Leadership Council about the ways Edina High School students have been advance environmental stewardship.
But in all honesty Paul Douglas, yes that Paul Douglas, stole the show. He gave a great presentation about his how his views surrounding renewable energy and CO2 emissions have changed over the years. As well as what he is doing as part of his business ventures to lead Minnesota, and the country as a whole, to a clean energy future.
Not to mention we got to learn about his brief acting career. Believe it or not but Paul had a cameo appearance in the 1996 movie Twister. Accordingly a few years ago he received his last royalty check for his appearance, now it was only for 1 cent, but that’s show business right?
The whole night was as good as it gets when it comes to talking about building a new energy future for Minnesota.
It will be interesting to see where the Edina community’s new push for solar energy takes it, but I have to ask, which is the next Minnesotan community that will jump on the renewable energy bandwagon?
