Spring 2019 Newsletter: Clean Energy Momentum

The growing momentum toward expanding clean energy and reducing carbon pollution may not be a surprise to the readers of Conservation Minnesota’s newsletter. After all, in our annual surveys you have been pointing to this issue as a priority for as long as I can remember. But something definitely feels different about the opportunity we have to make a difference today.

First came Xcel Energy’s nation leading step among utilities, pledging to provide 100% carbon-free energy to customers by 2050 (read the full story in this issue). More recently, Governor Tim Walz announced a legislative package designed to put Minnesota’s entire electricity system on a path to 100% Clean Energy by 2050. Clean Energy First, a breakthrough policy that we’ve been working to advance for the past year, is included in this package along with policies to improve energy efficiencies, electrification, and energy storage.

These policies are bold and pragmatic at the same time, putting us on a clear path to clean energy while providing the flexibility for both large and small utilities to succeed. Every Minnesota home and business will get the affordable and reliable power we depend on every day.

There is growing bipartisan support for addressing this issue now because Minnesotans can reap economic benefits for communities across the state, have healthier air and water, and secure abundant clean energy that saves us all money.

Our work together will play an important role in helping Minnesota reach these clean energy goals. Thank you for all you are doing for our state and for future generations.

Sincerely,

Paul
