Transitioning to a Clean Energy Future

The case for clean energy isn't just about climate anymore. Now it's also about cost. Renewables are the most affordable energy sources available, and the states leaning hardest into wind and solar have the lowest electricity rates in our region.

In 2023, Conservation Minnesota helped pass the state’s groundbreaking 100% Clean Energy by 2040 legislation— the biggest step Minnesota has ever taken to tackle the climate crisis. The law requires every Minnesota electric utility to run-on carbon-free sources like solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear power by 2040.

In 2025, more than half of our electricity came from clean sources, but it will take sustained effort to reach 100%.

This isn't just a climate plan. It's a blueprint for a resilient, affordable energy system that works for everyone — one that improves public health and creates real jobs across Minnesota's economy. The 100% Clean Energy Standard shows we can cut our largest sources of pollution while keeping energy reliable, affordable, and job-creating.

The 100% Clean Energy Standard demonstrates how we can address our largest sources of pollution while creating jobs and ensuring Minnesotans’ energy remains reliable and affordable.

The national picture tells a different story. Energy prices are rising twice as fast as inflation, and demand keeps climbing — yet the federal government is stalling or canceling clean energy projects, while spending millions to prop up failing, highly polluting coal plants in our region.

Minnesota knows better. By leading on clean energy, we depend less on out-of-state power and more on energy generated right here — by Minnesota workers, for Minnesota families.

Protect 100 percent clean energy.

Changes are being proposed at the state legislature that would weaken the 100% Clean Energy Standard with carve-outs and exemptions. Let your legislators know you’re 100% behind the 100% Clean Energy Standard. Now is not the time to move backwards on clean energy.
